Welcome to another edition of our Traveler Interview Series. Today we are featuring Family Travel Blogger Hayley Stainton of Life As A Butterfly. That’s only the beginning guys. Continue reading her story below.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR FAMILY. NAMES, CHILDREN’S AGES, OCCUPATION/S. WHERE IS HOME?
I’m Hayley, author of the website www.lifeasabutterfly.com. I am a university lecturer based in the UK. I have two children- a 2-year-old and a newborn. Both are girls.
WHEN DID YOUR PASSION FOR TRAVEL BEGIN?
My passion for travel started when I was a teenager. I studied languages and travel and tourism to help kick start my travel career then as soon as I was old enough I started traveling whenever I could.
WHAT IS THE FIRST TRIP YOU REMEMBER TAKING BOTH INDIVIDUALLY AND AS A FAMILY?
My first trip as an adult was an 18-30 holiday to Ibiza with my girlfriends. I traveled a lot to the Balearics and Spain as a child, but I can’t remember my very first trip as I was very young!
HOW MANY COUNTRIES HAVE YOU VISITED THUS FAR?
I’ve traveled extensively throughout the world- too many countries to list!
WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE DESTINATION YOU HAVE BEEN TO SO FAR? WHY?
I’ll always love Thailand and South East Asia. I love the peaceful culture, the food, and the weather!
ANY UNIQUE EXPERIENCES OR CHALLENGES DURING YOUR TRAVELS YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE?
I once ate pigeon pie, thinking it was chicken in Morocco…
I have been traveling so many years that I have many stories! We got stuck in the mud with our baby in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle, my husband left me to get eaten by a hammerhead shark during our honeymoon to the Galapagos, we were the highest people in Africa when we summited Mount Kilimanjaro, I was almost bitten by a bullet ant in the Amazon Jungle, we had rockets fired above our heads whilst traveling in Israel and I saw a wild lion take down its prey just feet away from me…. to name a few!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR BLOG? HOW DID YOU GET STARTED BLOGGING? WHY DID YOU START A BLOG?
I started my blog back in 2011 as a means of communicating my travels with my family back home. 2 promotions, a Ph.D., 2 babies and countless destinations later I have finally decided to turn my blog into a business!
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH TRAVEL?
I’ve learned a lot about different cultures, histories, traditions, and ways of life. I’ve also learned a lot about myself (as cliché as that sounds). Travel is the best education and I am now enjoying showing the world to my two baby girls!
